Define your Brand Voice
The Voice tab in your Brand Profile holds brand voice notes, specific instructions added to every generation, topics to avoid, and prohibited claims. Suggest brand voice can draft it from one of your existing pages.
Last updated 1 day ago
The Voice tab is described in the product as "Tone for every sentence". It is where you say how you sound and, more importantly, what you must never say.
Find it at Sidebar β Brand Profile β Voice.
The Four Fields
Brand Voice
Prose describing how your content should sound. The placeholder gives the register to aim for:
> Confident and direct. We sound like a trusted partner, not a vendor. Plain language, focused on growth and accountability.
Describe the voice, not the values. "Trustworthy and innovative" tells a writer nothing. "Short sentences, no jargon, we explain the trade-off instead of only the upside" tells them what to do.
Specific Instructions
Labelled with the note "Added to every article generation prompt". These are standing rules, applied to everything.
The placeholder shows the kind of thing that belongs here:
> Mention our service areas naturally. Use short paragraphs. Write for business owners, not agencies.
Good candidates: preferred spellings, house style, how to refer to your product, formatting habits, who to address, and terminology your industry expects.
Topics to Avoid
Subjects to stay away from:
> Unconfirmed pricing, competitor names, or guarantees we have not verified.
Prohibited Claims
Marked in the product as "Hard stops. NarraSEO will never write these."
> Never say we are the cheapest option. Do not promise specific rankings or lead volumes.
This is the most important field on the page for anyone in a regulated industry, or anyone whose claims have to survive a legal review. Health, finance, legal, and insurance content all belong here.
Be explicit and literal. Write the sentence you must never see published, rather than a general principle.
Suggest Brand Voice
If you have existing content that already sounds right, you do not have to write the voice notes yourself.
Suggest brand voice analyzes a page or a document, then lets you refine the result. Its hint says exactly that: "Analyze a page or document, then refine the result below."
From a URL
- Select From URL.
- Paste the page address, for example your About page.
- Select Suggest.
Your About page, a strong blog post, or a service page all work. Pick something you would be happy to see imitated.
From a File
- Select Upload file.
- Select Choose file.
- Select Suggest.
Useful if your best writing is in a brand guide or a PDF rather than on the site.
If you Already Have Notes
You are asked "Update brand voice?" with the explanation that you already have brand voice notes, and offered Append or Replace.
Append if you are adding a second reference point. Replace if the existing notes were a placeholder.
On success you see "Brand voice updated".
Treat the suggestion as a first draft. It describes how a page reads, which is not always how you want everything to read.
Notes
All four fields autosave.
Prohibited claims are enforced during generation. Topics to avoid are steering. If something is a genuine compliance limit, put it in prohibited claims rather than topics to avoid.
The Voice tab is per project.
The Separate Brand Voice Feature
There is a second, distinct feature called Brand Voice, at /dashboard/brand-voice. It is easy to confuse with the Voice tab, so the difference is worth being clear about.
Brand Voice profiles exist so you can "switch voice for different clients or projects" and set a default so there is "less setup every time you start writing".
Each profile has: Name, Description, Audience, Tone, Style rules, Words to use, Words to avoid, Sample content, and a Default profile toggle described as "Use this profile by default for new writing in this workspace."
Create one with New Brand Voice. The list shows a profile count, when each was updated, and a Default badge.
The empty state explains the intent: "Create a profile to capture how you want to sound: tone, audience, style rules, and examples."
Which Should you Use
If you run one website, the Voice tab in your Brand Profile is enough.
If you write for several clients or need to switch registers across articles, captions, and emails, Brand Voice profiles give you named, reusable voices with words to use and words to avoid, which the Voice tab does not have.
They are not mutually exclusive. The project Voice tab describes how that project sounds by default.
